Tomatoes

Question
My red celebrity tomatoes have black spots on their seeds. The rest of the tomato is fine, but the black spots on the seeds are worrying me a little bit. So, I was curious if there was some sort of disease that caused this, or if it natural? And, are the tomatoes still safe to eat?

Answer
Dear Christian, Sometimes the center of tomato seeds is darker than the outside of the seed.  Since the rest of the tomato looks fine, that pretty much rules out the possibility of most diseases.  One thing that came to mind is perhaps botrytis blight, which is the same fungus that you get on overripe strawberries, but you would see fuzzy areas which you don't mention and normally you would only see it on an overripe cut piece of fruit. Then there is graywall, which would be a disease mostly seen on under-ripe fruit and the entire fruit would look off-color.  Personally, I am going for the theory that these seed are just a bit darker than others, much in the same way that some watermelon seeds are black and the under-ripe ones are light colored.  Either way the fruit is safe to eat.  There are no tomato diseases that make the fruit poisonous, but some diseases will make the fruit taste off, or make it look very unattractive.  If the tomato still tastes like a tomato, then there is nothing wrong with it.  I hope this information helps.  Good luck, Melissa
