QuestionDr. Vann,
I have a large oak tree in my yard with hundreds of small holes in the bark. What is this? Will I need to take the tree out?
Thanks
Bryan
AnswerBryan:
If these holes (approx. 1/4 inch diameter)are on the main trunk and seem to be arranged rather neatly in rows, then this may be evidence of a sapsucker (type of woodpecker). These usually have minimal impact on the overall health. A good general rule of thumb, watch the tree each spring to see how well it leafs out and whether all branches are filled w/leaves. If you start to see "naked" branches that are increasing each spring, then this may be a signal of declining health.
