Treatment for White Fly

Question
If I treat my gumbo limbo trees for the white fly's will it harm the "good" bugs.  I also have a couple of dessert sienna that are only about a year old and they draw butterflies.  I don't want to loose my trees, but I also want to keep the butterflies coming.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
Tracey,

Unfortunately, it is difficult to treat for white flies without harming beneficial or desirable insects.  Many products are available, but even the organic products such as neem oil or insecticidal soap may harm some of the beneficial insects.  Sometimes you can time the product when the beneficial insects are not active and avoid harming many of them.  There are a few cultural methods that you can employ which may provide some control.

If your trees are small, it may be possible to use hand removal and discard heavily infested leaves.  This will not be feasible for a large tree.

Whiteflies are highly attracted to the color yellow.  You can purchase yellow sticky cards or yellow sticky traps which will attract the whiteflies and they will stick on the cards.  The card will need to be monitored and when they are full or as recommended by the manufacturer, they should be discarded.  If you search on the internet for yellow sticky card or yellow sticky trap, you can find many suppliers and places to purchase.  The cards work better in closed situations (greenhouses), but they may provide some control since there are only a few trees you are trying to protect.

If possible, you might try to vacuum the whiteflies.  In the cooler morning temperatures, the flies are slower moving and it is possible to "catch" them by vacuuming.  The contents of the vacuum should be carefully emptied into a trashbag and placed in the freezer.  In about 24 hours, the bag can be discarded in the trash.

There are some parasites of white fly that can be bought, but they are really only for greenhouse use.  The parasites cannot handle the outside environment and they have not been effective in open locations.

I wish I could provide more help.  Maintaining beneficials is always tricky when you have a pest outbreak.

Good luck!
