Another sago palm question

Question
Sago
Sago
After reviewing previous questions and replies I haven't found any specific answer to what I am seeing on my sago.

There is a tan"ish" spongy growth on the "trunk" just below the leaves. It is not in the center of the plant so I don't think it's the flowering function you previously referenced on an image.

Also, when I bought it 2 months ago it came in a decorative ceramic glazed pot that had, small (maybe aquarium stones) that seemed glued together. I just re-potted it tonight and did salvage some of it. I don't know the purpose of it other than to maybe support the trunk. Do you know what it is and would it be safe to use if I could find it. I will upload another image where you can see a part of this.

Thank you - Ken

Answer
Ken:
From you photo, I do not recognize this "growth" as being a specific disease nor insect problem.  This may be a plant exudate formed in response to some environmental change.  If the plant looks good otherwise, I would watch this area periodically for any changes. Stones in a container usually are for added weight or drainage purposes.
