Sand Cherry bush

Question
Hi,
This June, we planted a few small bushes in our yard. Sand Cherry bushes. Very sandy soil.  London, Ontario, Canada..The leaves seem to be developing a white film..I was thinking like a fungus?  Leaves are curling a bit with it.  It has been very dry and then it has rained for about 2 days straight. Should I just wash the leaves? Or? Now dry again.
Regards,
Joanne

Answer
Dear Joanne, Your sand cherry bushes have powdery mildew, a fungal disease that is common with these plants.  You will need to spray the bush with benomyl, a fungicide, or you could spray with a lightweight horticultural oil (SunSpray is my favorite) as long as the temperature is not too high (I wouldn't use above 85 or 90 degrees Fahrenheit).  You will need to spray a few times about a week or 10 days apart and this condition will go away.  The leaves will also start to look more normal although you may have to trim off any that are already distorted.  Good luck, and let me know if you need further assistance.  Melissa
