Weeping Pussy Willow Crown

Question
QUESTION: We recently purchased property with a weeping pussy willow, about 6' tall.  This spring the tree branches began to bloom and then 1/2 of the crown (south facing) did not finish the bloom and the branches have since died. We had an unusually late and wet spring. I have been waiting for new growth from this half of the crown, but there hasn't been any.  The other half of the crown is flourishing.  What could be causing this and can anything be done?  I appreciate your help.

ANSWER: Hi Lynn:
Could be several things.  Check the bases of the dying branches. Look for any apparent physical damage where the bark may have been removed/damaged.  Consider pruning out the dead portions, just in case it could be a disease that is causing a dieback of the branches. Also, you might review any chemical use in which something may have been sprayed on that portion or poured on the ground under the tree. You are welcome to send along a photo of this plant.  I'll be happy to look at your image to see if anything may be apparent.

Regards
Steve

QUESTION: Thank you for your prompt reply.  I am attaching an image of the crown.  If you need to see more of the tree, I can send another photo.  Some additional information: we flood irrigate the property with water that can cause iron chlorosis, though this tree is watered with culinary.  And as a precaution we treated the root area with ironite.

Answer
Lynn:
Thanks for your photo, but unfortunately I did not see any good clues here.  You may wish to have a soil test conducted since you are adding the ironite. A soil test may offer some evidence. For the test, you can contact your local county Cooperative Extension Agricultural office. It is usually free through that agency. It will give you a through profile of the soil like pH, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potash content.  The office is usually located in the courthouse building in your county seat.  You may also check in with your local garden center (not big box store nursery)about getting one done also. They may be able to direct you to the Extension office.
