Thuja trees

Question
Hi. I bought 4 Thuja trees about a month ago. I followed the directions and planted them accordingly. I've watered them every other day on average. I live in the St. louis metro area. I've noticed that in the last week or so the ends are turning brown and yellowish. Any sugestions would be appreciated. Thanks Mike

Answer
Mike:

From your description, these may be symptoms of a root related stress, rather than a bona fide infectious disease. If you like, you can send me a photo of a single tree showing these symptoms.  These trees prefer a sunny location and well drained soil.  Avoid overwatering- this can lead to big problems.  Ideally, a through/deep watering at planting, then depending on the soil type, a good drink each 3-4 days.  The period after planting and until the plant becomes established is critical to the plant.  It is a time where plants can go into a "transplant shock" getting adjusted.  If these symptoms that you describe are over most of the plant on the tips of the branches, it may be this shock.  You may consider cutting back the water a bit, especially if your location is getting plenty of water already from rains.
