Tulip Tree w/ White Spots on Branches

Question
QUESTION: Hello!  Thank you in advance for your assistance.  I have a Tulip Tree that has white round fuzzy spots all over the branches and trunk of the tree.  Leaves look okay except for a sticky substance that is on some of them that is attracting bees, flies, wasps, etc.  The sound of the insects while walking by the tree is what got my attention to further investigate.  Tree looks good and is growing.  Located in Missouri.  Thanks Again!

ANSWER: Theresa:
If these spots are "leaf-like". or even flat, they may be lichens. Use you computer to search "Google Images" for some pictures of different lichens.  If this isn't lichens, can you send me a closeup photo of these spots? Lichens are not disease causing organisms. We see them on rocks, fence posts and even on power lines.

The sticky stuff on the leaves sounds like "honeydew".  This is the sugary "poop" of insects like aphids, some scale insects and a few others. Reminds you of varnish. Leaves may then develop sooty mold.  This is a fungus that grows on this sugary stuff. Control of honeydew-- control the insects that are producing it.

P.S. The Tulip tree is my favorite tree!

QUESTION: How do you control the honeydew?  Thank you!

Answer
Theresa:
Control the insect that is causing it. Best to get an ID first. You can locate the insect on the leaves, then carry some of these leaves into your local garden center or nursery to get an employee to look at them. Based on the ID, a suitable insecticide can be prescribed. A general product to consider is BAYER ADVANCED GARDEN Tree and Shrub Insect Control. It is a liquid concentrate that is mixed with water, then applied to the soil around the tree. Be sure to read the directions on the label on how to mix and apply.
