QuestionI have a very large and wide deodar cedar in my yard. I do not know exact age, but the house was built in 1900. It spans over half our neighbors house as it is close to the property line. Recently I returned home after 10 days away to find all my shrubs, lawn, compost bin, etc., covered with a resin of some sort which must be from the tree. Does this indicate disease? We had it trimmed 10 years ago at a cost of $1,000.00. It is in need of a cleaning out again, but money is tight and I'm hoping it is not sick (as well as a bit shaggy). Thank you.
AnswerColleen:
I do not suspect a disease based on your description. You may take a look at the branches for any evidence of insects on the needles. Some trees may actually "weep" sap during some environmental conditions. For a more thorough assessment, consider contacting a certified arborist in your community to make a "house call" to give you an overall health checkup.
