QuestionYou answered a question in March for someone whose Yucca had suffered from a severe winter. I have the same problem, but my Yucca, (which has 3 large 'trunks' with some smaller offshoots and is about 8'high)has started growing small green shoots quite far down a couple of the trunks. My question is, should I cut off the remaining (apparently dead) trunks above the level of the new shoots, or will this kill the plant? It has become quite an eyesore in our yard!!
AnswerDear Charlotte, You have very good instincts. Yes you can cut off the top part of the trunks to prune it. The smaller shoots will grow out and replace the old tree. Just be sure to make a clean cut each time, and you might want to treat the exposed surface with NEEM, an organic product that works as an insecticide, miticide, and fungicide and will help the cut surface heal. This often happens in winter where the tops of plants will die off but leave viable shoots. You could also seal the surface with pruning paint to avoid letting the bottom of the tree dehydrate, but I would use it very sparingly on a yucca. Your new plant should look great in just a few months. Good luck and let me know if you need further assistance. Melissa
