Hibiscus Care

Question
light
light
Hi Ms Melissa,

My family member just bought a pot of Hibiscus with single-petalled purple blooms. I read that these plants need full sun to grow well and sadly, my balcony seldom receives full sun, especially in the middle of the year. I'm currently growing a Hibiscus which looks quite spindly but flowers regularly( I place it near the window sills). May I know if Hibisus can tolerate the light conditions at my balcony? I don't expect it to flower regularly but I do hope at least it can still survive and put on new leaves. See att image of my balcony. Tks!

Answer
Dear Alfredo, If your light level on your balcony is close to the light level of the other hibiscus which is growing near the window sills, then it will probably grow similar to the other hibiscus which blooms but is spindly.  Remember I have seen pictures of your sanbac jasmine which usually requires about the same light as hibiscus.  Those flowers were so beautiful I could almost smell them.  You might try to get a fertilizer with a very low first number and higher middle number, because that will help with the plant looking too spindly.  I think you might be able to get it to work on the balcony; if that fails, just put it next to the other one.  In San Antonio, Texas there is a riverwalk that is somewhat famous and there are a lot of tropical plants including crotons and hibiscus growing and blooming beautifully under a canopy of trees so they are somewhat shaded.  Good luck, Melissa
