QuestionMy ponytail palm was very healthy for a year. Now it is getting this white fuzzy, kind of sticky, (for want of a better word) disease on its leaves and in the center bark areas. Some new shoots turn brown. I haven't a clue what to do for it, can you help?
AnswerIt sounds like you have an insect problem. It could be mealy bugs, but I cannot tell for certain from your description.
Many insects will feed on leaves and leave a sticky substance on the plant. Begin by washing the plant with a strong stream of water. You may be able to dislodge some of the insects just with the water. Then, I would suggest that you use an insecticide to treat the plant. There are many insecticides that you can use which can be found at your local garden center. Insecticidal soap would be a good product to select. It may be necessary to make a second application in 1-2 weeks. You may also want to treat the plant with a systemic product. These insecticides are absorbed by the plant and if any eggs hatch out later, the insects will be killed when the feed on the plant. Bayer Advanced tree and shrub insecticide is one product that could be used. Be sure to check the label for mixing instructions and other information on treating plants.
