QuestionHi! I live in Nova Scotia. I started sunflowers in peat pots and I think I started them too early maybe? They're about a foot tall and higher and I won't be able to plant them until some time in May I think. Will they survive until then?
AnswerSunflowers cannot tolerate frost. I always recommend planting them one week following the last expected frost for your area. I personally direct-seed sunflowers sometime in mid-May. They are very fast growing and often bloom by mid-summer.
At this point there is not much you can do other than pinch the tops should they start to get spindly. This will promote a more stocky growth habit, and will enable you to wait until the end of May to transplant them.
