Will green Nasturtium seeds germainate?

Question
I live in San Jose, CA (zone 9b). Some plants such as Nasturtiums will grow here year round.  It is September 27 and I have collected seeds from my Nasturtium plants and would like to plant them right away when they are still green?

Will the green seeds germinate or is it better to let them dry before planting them?

Answer
Jane,
By "green" do you mean in color? If the seeds are still green in color they aren't ready to pick yet. You'd want to wait until the seed pods turn tan/brown before picking them to be sure they are fully formed. In your area it is still getting cooler at this time of year so you'd want to wait until January or February to plant them as Nasturtiums like heat.  They will grow year round in tropical areas where it never goes much below 72 degrees, but I think that in your part of CA it gets cooler than that in the winter, yes?

If you mean "green" as in fresh, but your seeds were tan in color when you picked them they are viable, but again you'll want to wait until the temperatures are on the upswing rather than getting cooler before planting.

I hope this helps,
C.L.
