Question

coconut baskets   QUESTION: I have several coconut wall baskets under a cover porch that is against the back wall.  What kind of flowers will grow under the porch out of direct sunlight?  Would like to have some trailing as well as upright blooming flowers.  I live in Virginia.

If the area is bright then you could use any of the begonias. Angel Wing begonias have pink flowers and pretty foliage, for example. Keep in mind that any blooming plant will shed old flowers and petals on the furniture that is under these baskets, however. If the area isn't bright consider ferns for the baskets - they will be a bright fresh green. You can use variegated ivy for a trailing plant.

I'm wondering about how these baskets will function on your white wall, however. Keep in mind that the coconut liners will leak water that will run down the wall and drip onto the furniture. The plants won't do well unless they are well watered when dry - giving them just a little water won't help them to develop big root systems and grow, and watering throughly is likely to make a mess of your walls and cushions. But perhaps you've thought of this and have a way to prevent it.

QUESTION: You are right, didn't consider the mess it may make.  What about air ferns or maybe some real like artificial plants or ferns, any suggestions?

So called air-ferns are usually just plants that have been preserved so that they stay green. You could use silk foliage or flowers, or make a dried arrangement. Most craft stores carry dried flowers and stems that can be pretty - bunches of dried lavender, for example. Or you could buy a couple of artificial ivy bunches and then periodically stick dried flowers in and among the ivy.
