Matthiola? Stock?

Question
Hi I bought 3  of these plants and have established that they are stocks. I dont know what type they are, they have double flowers and are a deep pink (like fuchsia), do they live long?
Are they Annuals? Perennial?
How tall do they grow?
Do they re-seed?
Can I make cuttings out of them?
They seem to love the sunshine.
Is the Matthiola the same as the Virginia Stock? Are they different?

Answer
Kumari,
This is an annual that I call a "heart break plant" - first it touches your heart because it is pretty with a great fragrance, and then it breaks your heart because it doesn't live long.  Two common names are "Garden Stock" and "Ten Week Stock" - the ten week reference is its life span.

This plant is grown from seed but they don't commonly reseed in the garden. They like cool weather, and usually bloom for a three week period - you might be able to keep them going a bit longer by deadheading as soon as the flowers go by.

If you like the spicy scent that the Stock have, plant some perennial Dianthus in your garden - many of them have the same fragrance.

I hope this helps!
C.L.
