Question
I have pine trees growing on my north side of house.
I am wanting to plant new guenia impatients in this area
but wondered if the soil would be too acidic for this type
of plant?

Hubert, impatiens prefer a neutral PH of 7.0.  If you're not sure what your PH level is, you can purchase a PH kit at most garden centers. They are inexpensive, easy to use, and very accurate. If your soil is too acidic, simply add powdered lime to your soil. If it is too alkaline, add ground sulfur. A good rule of thumb is that soils west of the Mississippi are usually alkaline; east of the Mississippi are generally acidic.

One point of interest - gardens high in organic matter seldom need PH adjustment; another strong argument for amending your soil with organic matter such as compost, peat, aged manure, and shredded leaves. These amendments will balance the ph level; provide a constant source of nutrients throughout the growing period, and protect your plants from insects and disease.
