QuestionOne week ago I planted snapdragons in a bed that gets partial shade. I live in Las Vegas, but the soil quality in the bed is good and it has cooled off here to mid 70's during the day and 60's at night. I have watered the snapdragons everyday since planting. My problem is, some of the plants are drooping and falling over, the blooms are withered and the leaves are limp. But some of the snapdragons planted only inches away look great. What am I doing wrong? Do they need more water or less? Should I cut them back?
AnswerJulie,
I thought I'd answered this for you right away, but now I see that it is still in my mail box at AllExperts, so my apologies for the delay.
Snapdragons don't do well with too much moisture, and they can collapse in a hurry if they are too wet, especially in weather where the evenings are cool. My guess is that you are watering too much. Ease off on the watering - maybe water every three or four days = the plants shouldn't wilt from lack of water, but should not be watered if the soil is still moist.
In my experience Snapdragons that have already yellowed seldom bounce back, so you might want to replace them either with new snaps or some pansies.
I hope this helps!
all the best,
C.L.
