Question
I have 2 hanging baskets of petunias that seem to have some kind of bug. The flowers have been eaten, often at the base of the bloom. The plants have little tiny black specks(almost tiny seeds) all over them. I sprayed it with a plant raid but that turned all the flowers brown. What can I do to get rid of these creatures?

Cara, your plants probably are being attacked by mites or flea beetles. To control these insects, you must use an insecticide specifically for plants. Regular household sprays will burn the foliage.

The safest and most economical control is insecticidal soap. You can purchase this at most garden centers, or make your own by adding one tsp. of lemon non-concentrated liquid dish soap to one gallon of water. The soapy extract destroys the digestive systems of the insects.

Two other organic alternatives are pyrethrum and rotenone. Both are made from plant extracts and are very effective against insects. You can purchase these at your local garden center or through organic companies such as Gardens Alive or Planet Natural. I have attached both links for your convenience.
