Question
I am looking for a fast growing sturdy and pretty ground cover that will grow in the hot sun.  Can you help me?

Connie, my recommendation would be Pachysandra over English Ivy.  But both are great ground covers. Since they stay low, they should not choke out other plants, but be aware that regardless of what kind of ground cover you use, it will spread. Also, English Ivy may start vining up some of your other plants.  

Pachysandra, on the other hand, stays at 4" maximum which means your perennials and annuals should be able to grow through them without being choked out. To play safe, plant them a foot away from your perennials and/or annuals, spacing them every 8" in good rich soil. They do especially well in light to medium shade.
