QuestionHi,
When I deadhead salvia, I have been running my fingers up the stem to clear all
spent flowers. Should I clip the entire stem instead? Also what is the best way to
deadhead firewitch dianthus..I have at least one hundred of them as a border.
Thanks for your help..Joe
AnswerJoe, it is best to remove the topmost growth, including the stem. All you need to do is cut below the top set of two leaves. This forces the plant to grow side shoots, which in turn results in more blooms in a more stocky growth habit.
All annuals and perennials should be deadheaded in this manner, with the exception of petunias. Those should be sheared by 1/3 every 4 weeks.
Good luck, and write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Mike
