Transplanting flowering shrubs

Question
I have some shrubs I would like to transplant but am not sure of when would be the best time.  I have 3 azalia bushes that bloom in April-May.  They are a couple of years old and about 2-1/2 feet tall.  Then I have 2 Camilia bushes that bloom during Jan - March and they are about 3 feet tall but not full at all and finally, I have 3 gardenia bushes that bloomed in June and will probally bloom again this year, I can't remember when.  They are also small.  What do you suggest?  By the way, we live on the Outer Banks of NC but not on the beach.
Thanks for your help.
Sharon

Answer
The best time is usually right after flowering for the azaleas, but at this point in time, I would recommend that you wait until early fall just as the temperatures come off their high (the earlier in fall the better). Get as much of the original root ball as you can and then make sure you water the shrubs well in their new position for several weeks. Also, make sure you plant them slightly higher than they are growing today.
