We have had petunias forever.... and they have lived. But this year we are not having a good year. They are dying. We have sprayed them with fungicide and it is not helping. All of the other different flowers are fine & some petunias are fine too. But there are no bugs on the ones that are dying. What can we do?
Answer -
Petunias can sometimes be attacked by fungi. Try to cut them back to a few inches from the crown and let them grow back. Apply a diluted fertilizer at this time also. THen fertilize monthly (rather frequently and lightly than heavily and infrequently) and keep the plants dry to extend possible (water by base and water early in the day). This can happen in periods of very hot humid conditions.
Even in pots?
AnswerDo they get enough water, or does the pot become excessively dry between watering ? You could consider potting the petunias into larger pots with more soil.
If the soil on the other hand is very damp and the plants yellowing despite (because of) the moist soil, make sure the planters/pots have adequate drainage holes. Try to repot with moist (not dry, not wet) soil and then water once really well to settle the roots. Then do not water unless the top of the soil should signs of drying out.
Too much water or excessive wet/dry cycles are not good for most plants. Petunias handle moderately (!!) dry conditions better than waterlogged conditions, but still make sure the pots are not excessively dry between each watering. In hot sunny weather, petunias can dry out quickly in pots.
