Question
I just planted my impatients a few days ago, and the petals looks like maybe something is eating them.  It looks like little holes, not on the leaves, just the petals.  Do you have any idea what could be the problem?  Any info is appreciated!

Michele, the general rule of thumb is that crawling insects eat the foliage and that flying insects eat the flowers.

In this case, it could be either aphids or some type of beetle.  I would spray the plants with insecticidal soap.  You can either purchase this product at most garden centers or make your own.  Simply add 3 tsp. of non-concentrated lemon dishwashing soap to a gallon of water.  Add 1 tsp. lemon ammonia and spray it directly on the plants.

There are chemical insecticides that are very effective, but I try to stay away from those due to environmental concerns and cost.  Two great organic insectides are pyrethrum and rotenone.  You have to find a nursery that sells these products or purchase them on-line through a company such as Gardens Alive.  Attached is their website.
