QuestionPurchased one today and want to plant it in a hanging basket in my linia. I live in zone 9 and would like all the info about growing and propagateding from stem or flower.
Thanks!
AnswerJimmy,
Fushias want bright locations but no direct sun - they are fine in shade or part shade, or near a bright window or on a porch. They need to be checked for water every day - feel the soil and water if dry. Fushia's are not drought tolerant.
Watch for signs of whitefly, which this plant is prone to. Spray with insecticidal soap at the first sign of whitefly. (Signs include tiny tiny white specks flying off the plant - insect litter -looks like dust- under the leaves, or curling leaves)
Fertilize your plant regularly with a liquid fertilizer used according to directions - I am partial to Peters All Purpose Plant food, but others are available. Do not use so called "bloom booster" fertilizers.
Propagate fushias by taking cuttings of about 5 inches at end of branches - newer growth that has been on the plant two or three months is good. Be sure to use a rooting powder or gel, and coat at least one set of leaf nodes (where the leaves were attached to the stem - you will remove these lower leaves from the stem and put this area in the rooting hormone and into the damp soilless potting mix.) You can root in vermiculite, but I am partial to a good seed-starting soilless potting mix, because the young plants can root and grow in the same pot.
After taking the cuttings, put a plastic bag LOOSELY around the pot so that some air flow is there but the moisture is kept around the plant. Remove the bag after three weeks and plants should be rooting then.
I hope this helps!
