QuestionHi and thanks in advance for your help. I have a large collection of daylilies of mixed colors planted at the base of a a wooden fence in upstate NY (about 100 miles N of NYC). This area gets plenty of sun. Can you suggest an
annual to plant among the daylilies that would provide a long lasting period of bloom. This area normally has daylilies mostly in June and July and lacks color much of the year. This daylilies are of the convential height and could use some color at their feet. Thanks again, John
AnswerJohn, my favorite annuals include profusion zinnia, limbo violet petunias, and any variety of geraniums.
The profusion zinnia is a recent hybrid that keeps a very compact growing habit, does not require deadheading (although I still recommend doing so), and is completely disease resistant, even to common zinnia diseases such as powdery mildew. They grow to 15" and come in 5 different colors including fire, orange, cherry, white, and apricot.
Limbo violet petunias are a recent AAS winner and bloom only 7 weeks after sowing. They bloom continuously throughout the summer and require very little deadheading.
Geraniums are a must in my opinion in any garden. They are pest and disease resistant and bloom profusely with consistent deadheading. Most varieties grow to 18"-24".
Although I've listed my own favorites, it is important that you choose the varieties and colors that appeal to you. Attached is a link to Park's Seed. They have the best variety of seeds and plants available. They offer a free catalof that has very vivid photographs of every plant. I would highly recommend searching on the plants I listed above, and also ordering a free catalog.

I hope this helps. Good luck, and please write again if I can ever be of assistance.
