QuestionI recently purchased a Sea Grass Hanging Basket.
In the basket there is a plastic liner. After potting my annuals I noticed that the water was holding and not draining. Should I take the liner out or poke holes in it? Any suggestions would be helpful.
AnswerIt depends on the annuals used. The liner will retain water and thus result in less watering demand. Baskets placed in full sun tends to dry out very quickly and the liner will help retain water. However, some annuals are very sensitive to consistently saturated conditions and will not do well (lobelia, salvia etc) while others have a huge demand for water and will experience foliage loss if allowed to dry out even for a short period of time (coleus for example).
Personally, I always remove the liners to avoid root rot problems. I then mix in watering crystals into the growing medium. However, if you are using annuals with very large water requirements in full sun it may be a good idea to leave it.
