Insect repellant

Question
Are there any plants that I can plant that will repel mosquitos? We live in Virginia and we have alot of problems with them due to standing water from our neighbors yard after a ran. We have a small back yard that is fenced in. Thank you for your time. Carol

Answer
Unforunately there are no plants which are capable of providing protection for mosquitos. Some plants with a citronella odor has given claim to control mosquitos, but the truth is that they really do not.

The best option is to convince your neighbors to buy a mosquito larve insecticide and spread on the lawn. the insecticide is harmless to animals (dogs, cats, birds, etc) and to humans, and is ineffective against mature mosquitos, but it will kill mosquito larves..

Mosquito Dunks, and Mosquito Quick Kill Granules are based on the insecticide Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti), and you can also consider PreStrike Granules which is based on the insecticide Methoprene.

Methoprene prevents adult emergence by disrupting the development of mosquito larvae. Bti toxin attacks the digestive tract. It is lethal only to mosquito wrigglers and the larvae of some aquatic gnats and black flies. Neither methoprene nor Bti toxin is harmful to fish, waterfowl, pets, or humans when used according to label directions.

PreStrike is available in shake bottles and very little is required. Usually low spots in the lawn where water tend to settle can be covered with preStrike instead of the entire lawn.
