QuestionI have a 3 year old lilac bush.It has grown taller this year. But no flowers. My question is.....Should I cut the taller branch off in the fall. or just leave it as is? The larger branch is about 5 feet tall, and a few smaller branches at the base........
Thanks,
Straw
Answeri'm in NJ. lilacs should be pruned w/in 30 days after flowering to not reduce next years flower production. if you prune in the fall you will not get many flowers in the spring. when they get older(10 years) prune out old branches to rejuvinate. new branches produce more abundant flowers. visit a local garden center/nursery to see what they recommend in your area. buy a pruning book while there(sunset, ortho, etc.).
