Question
mystery cactus
Hello Maureen,
I am wondering if you can help me identify this cactus. It was grown in Canada by Sorensen Greenhouses, and I know the flower is fake and glued on.
Thank you!
Taylor
AnswerDear Taylor,
I am not exactly sure which columnar cactus it is so I sent it along to some folks that will, so be patient. I think it's an Echinocerus or Echinopsis butam not sure. In the mean time I would repot it in a pot with a hole at the bottom, the size is OK, in good well draining cactus medium. The bigs stores always plant them in awful stuff.
The little dead arm next to the healthy one needs to be removed and you need to look for rot. Hopefully it will separate from the other stalk. if there is any black in the healthy stalk you will need to cutaway any rot and brush it with fungicide. I'd leave it out for a few days to callous. If the rot is in the roots than you probably can't save the plant.
By all mean gently remove that hideous straw flower.
I will get back to you about Genus and if you have any questions about potting let me know.
Maureen
Well was wrong. I'm told it is a Cleistocactus samaipatanus. Same care tho.
