Organ Pipe Cactus

Question
I'm about to drive out to Yuma,AZ from Tucson,AZ to help my Mimi fix her cactus. Her and my grandfather planted this Organ Pipe Cactus over 30 years ago and it blew over in Thursdays storm that we all had. Is there any tips that I should know to try and make sure this thing doesnt die. Its been up rooted since Friday morn when she found it and she has kept the roots wet with a towel. Its approx 10 feet high and I need to make sure it stays in the ground. Both myself and Mimi would GREATLY appreciate ANY knowledge you could help us with. I will be starting on this project today around 2pm when I arrive in Yuma.

Answer
My best recommendation is to find an expert in replanting these large cacti.  It can be dangerous to the cactus and also to you to try to do it yourself.  The cactus is very heavy and probably requires belts and a truck to pull it back up and then staking it in place.  The roots will be fine for the time being.

You can contact your local agriculture extension for names of folks that do this sort of thing or any botanical garden in the area. It is done that way for Saguaros and I believe the Pipe Organ Cactus is the next largest so the process requires someone who really knows how to salvage  these impressive plants.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but that's my best advice both for you and the plant.

Let me know how you make out.

Maureen
