Peruvian Apple

Question

New cuttings
I just took some cuttings of a very large plant scheduled to be destroyed by the owner and am wondering how best to replant for best results. I'm in Phoenix, AZ with temps' in the high 60's or low 70's (for now). I have a greenhouse if necessary. Is it a must to allow cut ends to dry prior to potting or will potting w/ a dry mix be o.k.?  I'm looking for solid advice to achieve solid growth.
Thanks in advance for your time.

Answer
Cerus repandus cuttings should be allowed to callous from 1-3 weeks depending on how large the cutting.  If you can let them callous in an upright position there is less chance of rot.  I start cuttings in moistened vermiculite or perlite and don't water again till roots develop then transplant to cactus soil mix. Use a pot 1/2 to 1 inch larger than the cutting and stake it if it seems unstable.  They are hardy to zone 9a tho I'd be a tad cautious about that when they are young. They have regular cactus watering needs, which is dry and drench and if you put them outside (after they are established)  do it gradually so they don't burn.

I hope you have plenty of room as you know how large they can get.  They develop wonderful flowers in 2-3 years that only last a day and the fruit is tasty I'm told.

Good luck!
