QuestionI have a Christmas cactus. It's been on the patio all year until just recently. Very flush with stems and flowers. I thought it was a real cactus and did not water much at all. After bringing it in I watered thouroughly and put it in a bright area of the kitchen. This was about a month ago (so. NM). Last week blossoms and stems started falling off. Wazzzup? Second question on real cactus (Faxon yucca) New yard has two 5' Faxons in a corner. One recently started turning yellow and gradually black spots and blacn ends of fronds, gradually turning all black. Wazzup here also. Thanks
AnswerSandy,
You may have waited to long to water it. That particular cactus is a tropical cactus and thus needs to have moist soil. Probably what happened is the roots died, and now the stems are falling off. Keep the soil moist (not wet) and give it some time, it may come back.
As far as your Yucca goes (not a cactus), if you have others that are unaffected, it may have been attacked by Agave beetle larva. If that is the case, it is too late for that one. Get some "grub or borer" pesticide (usually crystals that you sprinkle on the ground around the Yucca's) and follow the directions. It has been a very bad year for Yucca's and Agave's because of those beetle's. Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Greg
