QuestionI live in Del Rio Texas. About 1992 or 1993 I legally purchased a 3ft tall Saguaro Cactus in Tucson AZ. It was tagged and I brought it home to Texas. It is now 12 ft tall and everything I have ever read says they dont grow this fast. It is incredibly healthy and fat, Just this summer it had a growth spurt of 6in. My brother ,who lives in Tuscon, brought me another one a few yrs later and it was 4ft tall. It is now 7ft tall. It has been the talk of the town for years. Is this way beyond normal growth rates?
AnswerWilliam,
Saguaro's, as well as many other cacti can grow very quickly. The difference is that the saguaro in AZ gets only about 7 inches of rain per year on average (if at all some years). Also, many people do not realize that saguaro's grow faster the larger they get. In its natural state, a saguaro might take 60 years to get 3 feet tall, but then sprout up to 2 or 3 times that height, like your has in 20 some years.
As long as yours isn't split (from too much water), it sounds healthy to me. Good luck!
Sincerely,
Greg
