Clipping Aloe Sprouts.

Question
I saw a post someone had put up asking about clipping and trimming their aloes, now my aloe has atleast four or five little babies growing from its base, and my simple question which I have to fidn an answer to online is, what is the best way to clip these little guys and re plant them so as to get them up and going- i.e. how much root do I need attached with it, etc.- And, its nearing the end of september and while I livei n the Southwest, so my aloe is out doors almost all spring and summer, it will freeze here soon and they will be moving inside- Is it ok to clip the smaller ones right now before it goes dormant, or should i wait until they are dormant to clip and transplant them? Thanks for the time and im eager to get your response.

Answer
William,

The best time would be when the plant is actively growing. If yours are dormant or going dormant, it might be best to wait until spring. Aloe's are not the easiest to root from cutting and do require patience. My last successful rooting went like this: Took the cutting, let it sit out for a month, then I planted it in a very sandy soil mixture. It is now 4 months later and I am just starting to see new growth.

It might be worth your while to find some rooting hormone gel to use. Hope this helps and good luck!

Sincerely,

Greg
