Question
I have a cactus that is 23 years old.  It stands about 9" high.  For many years it has grown straight up from its pot but now it grows leaning away from the window, its only light source.  The pot is about 4" deep and not very wide.  The cactus looks like a prickly cucumber, with of course, the very sharp needles.  Recently, it has started new growth off the side which is just a small circle at this point.  It does not lean onto this side though, unless it is pointed toward the window.  It leans away from the light/window.  When I turn the pot to encourage it to stand straight, it slowly leans to the other side.  Why is this cactus insisting on leaning?  Is there anything I can do if it is not its natural growth habit?

I'm not sure why it would grow away from the window, unless the window is open and a breeze is pushing it that way. Typically indoor cacti will grow towards light. You might try staking it up, using a very thin stake (they carry them at Home Depot if you have one close to you). Use the translucent green tie wrap as it remains flexible (also available at Home Depot or any nursery)
