QuestionTo whom it concerns
I have a 6 feet tall Aloe ferox that recently flowered but did not produce any seed. When I examined the flowers closely I found that what appeared to be the stigma and style looked as though they had dried up and shrivelled to what seemed like a short piece of brown thread.I don't know if the plant ever produced any seed before as I only received it about four years ago.
I was wondering if you have ever heard of this
happening before.I would greatly appreciate your opinion on this.
Yours sincerely
James
AnswerJames,
It's hard to say. I also have a 3 foot Aloe ferox in my yard that was flowering when we got a very cold snap. It was 20 degrees at our house and the entire flower stalk froze. It is possible that some frost nipped the flowers if your plant is outside. The plant itself is much hardier than the flower stalk.
It is also possible that the flower was not fertilized in time. Many Aloe's are fertilized by birds that are very similar to Humming birds (in Africa where they are native). So if there are not any other Aloes around to cross pollinate or no Humming birds, that could also be a reason. Most Aloes (if not all) are not self pollinating, which means they can't be fertilized by flowers on the same plant. Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Greg
