QuestionOur large cigar (?) cactus (18') has fallen. Not sure how to upright or if it will survive. Any suggestions? My wife says, "cut it off halfway stick top 1/2 in hole and it will grow new roots, but I'm skeptical.
AnswerJohn,
That depends on the type of cactus. A very thick cactus like a saguaro are very difficult to root, although not impossible. However, if it fell over, chances are the side that hit the ground is damaged and will be scared.
If it was a smaller cactus, then it will be less damaged and more likely to survive. However, in either case, after you make the cut, you will need to let it heal for at least 3 weeks before planting. When you do plant it, make sure the side of the plant that was facing south when it was standing upright is facing south after you replant it.
Make sure that the soil around the plant is either sand or very fine gravel. If it roots, it will take a long time, so be patient. Let me know if you need any other information.
Sincerely,
Greg
