QuestionShould I cut it where it is starting to grow out of the original cactus?
Will it root better from there or in the middle of the growth???
Thanks

-----Question-----
HI - I have a 7 1/2 ft. column cactus which has two additional growths on the top and one is almost hitting the ceiling!!! - I was told to cut cactus in the spring but I can't wait - can I do it now? The extension is about 41 inches - I am using a 6 ft. pole to stabilize it - By the way - I keep the cactus on the balcony in the summer and indoors during the Chicago winter in front of the balcony windows - I tried putting a paper plate on top so it wouldn't grow anymore - I moved it out of the sun into a shaded corner - but it just won't stop growing - my other cactus are doing great too but not this tall

Debi,
Yes you can cut it now, just be careful when you do. There is no way to stop it from growing, so you may want to cut enough off so that your not making cuttings every year. Remove about 2 feet or so and you'll only have to trim it back every other year. Good luck.
Sincerely,
Greg
AnswerDebi,
You can cut it there. If you are planning to root the cuttings, just make sure that you don't make the cut in a "woody" part of the stem. About half way up the stem would be a good spot. Make sure to let the cutting heal at least a few weeks (about 3) before replanting. Then water only when the soil (use a cactus mix type of soil) is dry. Be patient as it may take a couple of months to root.
Good luck!
Sincerely,
Greg
