Re-planting pieces of Senita cactus

Question
I have a large Senita Cactus that must be moved. How and where do I cut sections off for replanting (as I love this plant for its flowers and fruit)Do I use a sand and potting soil mix and start the pieces off in large pots? Thanks, must hurry as trees are coming 11/22.

Answer
Dear Walt,

There are a couple of options. You can move the entire plant intact, however that is expensive. If you live in Arizona, give Arizona Cactus Sales a call and they can advise you on how to do that.

If that isn't an option, mark the south side of each arm you are going to cut. Make the cuts about a foot above the ground (or higher) depending on how "woody" the stems are. A woody stem will not root. After you make the cuts, let the arms heal (in a shaded area) for at least a couple of weeks before replanting.

Once they have healed, you can plant then in the soil, just make sure to face the south side of the plant that you marked, south. Plant them about 6 to 10 inches deep and water to pack the soil down. Do not water again until spring time, as we are supposed to have a wet winter.

Be careful, these branches will be very heavy and you will want 1 person holding the branch while the other is cutting (you don't want it falling on you). Let me know if you need any additional help.

Sincerely,

Greg
