what is the life expectancy of cacti (is that correct or is it cactus...?) anyways, i am interested in getting a plant. if i do what does it need? how much water to give it and any special fertilizers or special dirt, sand etc. thank you

That depends on the plant. Cacti range from tropical rain forest plants to the driest desert and every climate in between. It would be better if you picked a plant, then ask how to care for it. All have different needs for water, light, heat, cold, etc.
