Question
We had a large Saquaro blow over and break in several pieces.  It has all died and shriveled, but two of the arms (about 4 ft each) continue to be green as they lay on the ground.  Can I stand those pieces up in the ground?  Would they live or even grow?

If they are not damaged, maybe. Once the area that broke off has callused over completely, you can plant them in soil mixed with about 50% sand about 6 to 8 inches deep. If they root at all, it will take a very long time. Cacti that thick are very hard to root, but it is possible.  Make sure to water only when the soil is dry if they are in a pot, if they are in the ground, rain water should be sufficient.

It could take a year before you see any new growth, so be patient. Also, make sure you orient them north/south like they were on the main plant. If you do not know how they were positioned on the main plant, you will want to shade the southern side of the plant for a few months to ensure there is no sun burn which can kill a cactus very quickly.
