Question
My cuctus which is about 11 years old and 10+feet tall and at least 9in around is rotting from the ground up. It started at about 6 months ago and is now a 3rd of the way up. Right above the rot it's normal looking in color then turn to a yellow color, then light brown then dark brown working from tpo down. I took a pin and where it is green I could not push through, light brown was I was able to with some presure, but where it is dark brown the pin went right in like nothing. Can I cut above the dead area and replant? I could save about 6 feet or so. What's wrong with and can I save it?

Dear Douglas,

Depending on the type of cactus, it can be cut and replanted. I would cut it about 10 inches above the rotted part. Once you have made the cut (make sure to wear leather gloves and be very careful), look at the cross section and make sure there are no black or brown spots (especially close to the center).

If there are, cut another 6 inches off but only after you have cleaned the knife with alcohol. Do this until it looks there are no more dark spots. The let it "heal" for at least 2 weeks prior to replanting.

Either some kind of damage or over watering is what will cause it to rot from the bottom up. It will take a month or more to root, so be patient. Make sure only to water when the soil is dry. Hope this helps.
