QuestionWe have two large agaves (an Americana and a Blue Weberi). Both ar about three foot high, three foot diameter and have twenty or so fronds/large leaves that stand nearly vertical. During a recent monsoon, two of the Weberi's large fronds were bent over. I straightened them out and they seem to be holding ok for the moment (both fronds have large crease marks). Is there anything I need to/can do to help these fronds heal or regain their original strength? Or should I simply trim the fronds off at the base of the plant? Other than appearance - does trimming a frond or two off harm the plant? Thanks in advance!
AnswerDear Jim,
Jim, see answers below:
Is there anything I need to/can do to help these fronds heal or regain their original strength? Not really. After they have been bent, they will either return to their natural shape or not. If the leaf continues to droop, you can cut off some of the end of the leaf to reduce the weight of it.
Or should I simply trim the fronds off at the base of the plant? You can, and probably no one will notice other than you.
Other than appearance - does trimming a frond or two off harm the plant? It shouldn't, however whenever you trim any kind of plant, it is exposed to disease until the cut area heals.
Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Greg
