Rotten cactus

Question
The base of my cactus (I don't know what kind it is, but it's flat and sprouts new arms from every angle)had started to turn brown, and has now fallen over. The brown spot has a terrible odor, but the rest of the cactus looks fine, including the new growth. Should I dispose of the soil/red rocks that I had it planted in and start over or should I dispose of the entire cactus?

Answer
Dear Michelle,

You plant is definitely rotting based on your description. You may be able to save it if you cut off the rotten part. let it dry for a couple of weeks, then replant in new soil (cactus mix type). It will take a month or so to root, if it roots at all. Do not over water and water only when the soil is dry.

If this doesn't work, Then go ahead get rid of the plant. If you can tell me the type of plant, a name would be very helpful, i may be able to give you a better answer.

Sincerely,

Greg
