re-potted aloe vera

Question
I had a large beautiful aloe vera that I repotted, removing pups and potted them as well.  The plant had been inside all winter, and I moved it outside in late May when I repotted it. (zone 5)  I think I over watered it, but I'm wondering if I can save it.  It's turned grey, slightly purplish, and brown on the lower leaves.  It's still green in the very middle and has retained its shape.  Have I killed it or is their hope?  Should I move it back inside?  It gets afternoon western sun.  The pups are in worse shape, but I'd really like to save my mother plant.

Answer
Dear Megan,

It sounds like rot caused by over watering. If you can, check the main stem. Is it soft? If it is, it is time for a new plant. If the stem it still hard, then stop watering and let the plant weather it out. Water only if the soil is completely dry. Also, tug on the newest leaves in the very center of the plant. If they pull out, it is not going to make it. Sorry for all the bad news, I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Sincerely,

Greg
