care of saguaro

Question
I have a new saguaro. What is the best way to water and how often. Also dose it need any special feedings. Thanks

Answer
Dear Terry,

Saguaro's are pretty tough, but depending on the size of the plant, it will need different types of care...or none at all.

If it is 3 to 4 feet or more, you won't need to do much if at all for the plant. If it is a couple of feet or less, you may consider providing some shade  for it, especially if it was bought at a place like Home Depot.

The reason is that in the wild, Saguaro's will only survive if they start out under a small bush or tree (nurse plant). Also, most nursery grown cactus are not used to direct sunlight and will sunburn and die if planted out in direct sun. If it was a larger plant that was professionally planted, it should be fine.

It should not be watered until you see new growth. If you start watering right away, you may hurt the plant. After the first year, you won't need to worry about watering at all. Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Greg
