QuestionI have two yuccas and both are indoors. They stand about 5ft and are in reasonably large 50cm diametre terracotta pots. I have had them for about 2 years and up until 6 months they've been awesome specimens. We're in Summer here but I noticed that during the late Autumn and Winter period the tips of them started going brown except for the new leaves that sprouted through over spring. It looks terrible! Each prong has this ugly brown tip that measures about 3 - 4 cms.
Did I not water them enough during the winter period? Can I snip the dead part away without harming the rest of the leaf? Should I change their feeding? Is it time to put them outside?
Thank you in advance.
AnswerDear Chaeber,
If you can, always grow these outside - they'll grow better for you.
However, your problem is inherent to Yuccas - they grow new leaves, and as they do so, they lose their old ones. The old ones slowly dry up, shrivel, and eventually fall off. This is how Yuccas grow. Yes, you can cut them off, but that won't necessarily stop them from growing.
Are they in large enough pots or do you need to repot them? They might need more growing room.
Kind regards,
Jeff
