Can cactus/succulent growth be limited?

Question
We have an extremely tall cactus/succulent (possibly a Euphorbia acruensis?), with four sides, and spines (two-pronged, very short and thick) set regularly along the edges. We purchased it a couple of years ago at a local garden center and at that time it was already over six feet tall. Now, it is approximately 8'-6" at its tallest point (it has a twin that's a few feet shorter). Fortunately, our livingroom has a vaulted ceiling that crests in the center at about 10-1/2 feet. Plenty of frontal and ambient light, too. But, we only have another couple of feet to go before this specimen tops out! The question: how tall will this plant get? Can we limit its growth? If we transplant it to the outdoors, will it survive in the Central Texas area? Should we lop off the top as you suggested in another answer? Transplant it to a larger pot? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Answer
Dear Mike,

If you transplant it to another pot, it will grow even taller.

I don't grow that plant, so I am afraid I don't know how tall it will get. Being a Euphorbia, it's not likely able to survive your winters. Have you Googled the name of your plant to see how tall it will get? Another site is www.euphorbia.de - your plant will likely be there, or if you've a digital camera and send the webmaster (frank) a picture, he's very generous with his time.

Topping it will give you some more time to deal with it, and then you'd also have another one to grow.

Please let me know if you've any other questions.

Kind regards,

Jeff
