putting cacti in small strawberry jar

Question
A few years ago I bought a pot filled with several types of cacti & they didn't last long.  Can several different types be planted in a small strawbery jar & be compatable?  Can cacti & succulents be mixed in a strawberry jar?
Thanks

Answer
Dear Diane,

I apologize for the late response. I went on vacation and forgot to change my status. Anyway, here are some answers to your questions.

Yes, cacti and succulents can be mixed together. But I would arrange them so that the "desert types" are at or near the top and the ones that require more water towards the bottom. In any case, make sure you use a quick draining soil. A standard cactus mix will work just fine.

Only water when the soil on top is dry and then soak it good. In a very humid climate, it may take a few weeks to dry out. In Az where I live a, a week of 110 degree weather will do the trick. Do not put in direct sunlight. Keep it in strong indirect light, or at least afternoon shade. Most cactus are grown in greenhouses and never see direct sunlight and will sunburn if placed in it. Good Luck!

Sincerely,

Greg
